Take a step back and look at your garden. What is it that you like? What is it that you want to change?
You are now in the perfect timeframe for designing or redesigning your garden. If you are not happy with the actual location of some plants, now it's the time to (re)move.
Fall is also a good time to plant bulbs, bare root shrubs and or trees.

If you will follow some simple design principles, you'll be able to immortalize the autumn wonders in your own garden.

1. Fall is a season of bright colors. Bloom and foliage. Use this chance to obtain spectacular effects by using plants and shrubs with fall specific color of foliage and flowers.

2. Work with the light
Make use of the fall golden glow to create spectacular effects in the garden. Larch for example turns yellow in the fall looking like a flame in fall light. As a contrast, you can use Japanese maple with that glows with its red leaves in the autumn sun.

3. Create fall specific areas in your garden.
Arrange special spaces in high traffic areas with cornstalks, potted flowers, pumpkins and chestnuts.

4. Repeat elements.
Use a color, a shape, a texture throughout the garden to create the sense of continuity and unity. Don't be too obvious though.

5. Use layers.
Use plant and shrubs height to create spectacular effects. Smaller plants in the front is a must so they won't get masked by the taller ones.

6. Make way for the annuals.
You can bring a color boost to your fall landscape with annual plants as Dianthus, Rudbeckia, Pansies, Aster or Phlox.
