Before you put your lawn mower to bed, make sure it will start up again in the spring.
Find out how to prepare your lawn mower for the long sleep ahead.
1. Empty fuel tank because the gas doesn't stay fresh long. Just start the engine and let it run until the tank is empty. Start it again a few times until all gas from the carburetor is gone.
You can also use fuel stabilizer that can be found at home centers or gas stations and leave the gas in the tank.
2. Drain the oil if your mower has one. Make sure you dispose it properly by taking it to a special recycling center.
3. Turn the lawn mower over and using a small piece of steel wool (wear gloves) scrape off all traces of grass, dirt and other materials found underside the deck.
4. Take the blade off and sharpen it or take it to a specialized center for professional sharpening.
5. Change or clean the air filter. If it's made from paper, change it. Wash it in soapy water otherwise. Let it dry and pour in and over it a table spoon of oil to coat it slightly.
6. If you're afraid you'll forget to put new oil in the spring, do it now.
