More on choosing the right water plants for your garden.

Another splendid plant suited for larger gardens due to its larger dimensions is the lotus, a relative of the water lily.

They like to live almost anywhere in the U.S., with some sensible hybrids strains that don’t endure to well the northern climates.
With shorter bloom season than lilies, are still popular due to their spectacular leaves and flowers.
Flower arrangements are more beautiful with lotus seedpods in the bouquet.

Another category of plants suited for a water garden is bog plants like cattail, bamboo, Japanese and water iris; papyrus and other tall grass like plants that love the shallow areas around the pond edge.
Bog plants need to sit just below the later line because they grow in mud or in shallow waters (up to 6 inches).

There are some plants that don’t live above the water but are vital for the Eco balance, as they regularly replenish the oxygen supply in the water, they slow down algae growth, clear the water of excess nutrients and provide food for the fish. They are inexpensive plants (elodea), prefer sandy soil and are tough enough to stand the frost.

Free floating plants, like water hyacinth, not only keep algae under control by limiting light into the pond with their leaves, but also have great flowers. They need no soil they just float. Still, keep a sharp eye because they are extremely invasive fact proven by great environmental and economical damage in the southern US.
